Leaving Seattle, April 20th

A sun-spot over Puget Sound....

Christy in her down parka..

Bill and Tina are now the proud and happy parents of William C. Wood IV!! A picture is included on this post, and so that adds to the excitement of our return to B’ham on May 3rd!! Tina and William are doing well, but Bill is having trouble talking…it sounds like a small stroke or something. Well, I’ll have more about that as we gather data.

Docking in Seattle was not that difficult, except for the stress imposed on me by Christy. I think I now understand what is happening on that front….if there is any boat, anywhere, in Puget Sound, that is underway at the same time as we are, Christy is absolutely certain that there will be a collision. In fact, we “should stop, turn around, or something” if there is even a boat in sight. With that in mind, we approached Bell Harbor Marina with a ferry or two moving in and out, and a few large cargo vessels heading into the main Seattle ports, and a police boat (for a swat exercise…see pictures) that was determined to “beat us to the pass”. There was no one on the VHF or cell phone at the marina to tell us which slip to us, so we just chose one, and then headed to the Pike Street Market.

I’m sure everyone is familiar with this market, but it is always fun to be there. You can buy anything you want, and I’ve already written about overloading with scallops, shrimp, halibut cheeks, seaweed salad, bread, cheese and wine, but it is still good three days later (we couldn’t possibly eat it all). We have walked the town twice, and today walked to the Ship Canal that “locks” from the sea to Lake Union and then on to Lake Washington. There are several pictures of the houses on Lake Union that were made famous in the movie “Sleepless in Seattle” and they are so cute. We are planning on “locking up” to the Lake for a few days as time permits.

Here are two pictures of the “Split”, the mysterious name for the metal tree sculpture decorating the outside of SAM (Seattle Art Museum). Much of the décor is sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is only a block from the marina.

Here is the "Ship Canal" viewed from the Freemont Bridge..

Tomorrow (Sunday) we are heading further south to the Olympia are where there are many, many marinas and cool places to visit. They say that the capital, which is a 2 block walk from the marina, is one of the most beautiful in the country, so we can’t wait to see it. We will then stop at Gig Harbor, Bainbridge, Bremerton, and Poulbro on the way back north to Port Ludslow and Port Townsend. Our plan now is to arrive at Annacortes by May 1st in order that we can leave the boat there for our trip home to see the new “name-sake”. While the boat is there, Doug Comstock will install the “sun-room” to the rear cockpit and to the flybridge as well. We only have 10 days to get a lot of cruising done…

A little gift, that is called a "Therapeutic Knife Holder". Just thought I'd take a picture of it...

Yes, thanks. The symptoms of stroke are much improved now!
